Originally we hadn't planned to go to Frankenstein

Originally we hadn't planned to go to Frankenstein Castle as we didn't think we could fit it in, but I couldn't not go! Rumour has it Mary Shelley got her inspiration for the character name and profession from this castle and one of its inhabitants - though there is no evidence to support her actually visiting the castle she was nearby while on a river cruise. Maybe she heard the stories and decided to use it in her novel?

Found this gem of a ruin while driving through Bad

Found this gem of a ruin while driving through Baden-Baden this afternoon. Built in 1170 it was used as a Royal residence for the Margraves of Baden until the end of the 16th century when it was destroyed by fire.

We couldn't come to Southern Germany and not visit the inspiration for the Disney Castle! It really is a beautiful place. Built by King Lugwig II as a passion project, he only got live in it for a short time before he was arrested in the castle.

Today we visited the longest castle in the world, and one of the biggest in Europe - Burghausen Castle. Built in 1285 and expanded to it's current size in 1335 by the Rich Dukes of Bavaria.

Today was a sobering and slightly traumatising day

Today was a sobering and slightly traumatising day at Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial. Most of the buildings were demolished or repurposed after the war ended, though some do still remain while others have been recreated to how they would have been. Opened in 1933, it was the camp all future camps would be based on, including the training of SS officers in the best way to handle the prisoners - with brutality. It was eventually liberated by US soldiers on April 29, 1945.

Never heard about Belton House until today! Built in 1668 for the Brownlow family. It was owned by the same family until the 1970's when it was handed over to the National Trust. The NT also purchased much of the furniture so the house has a very authentic feel to it.
